Maius
Maius Viticultors (often simply Maius) is a family-owned winery in Catalunya located in the village of La Morera de Montsant in the heart of the Denominació d’Origen Qualificada (DOQ) Priorat, one of Spain’s most prestigious wine regions known for powerful, expressive wines from steep, terraced vineyards.
Maius has its roots in a family wine-related business begun in 1949 in Sant Cugat del Vallès, where Manuel Gómez originally operated a retail wine shop. In the late 1990s, the family acquired vineyard land in Priorat and, with the collaboration of experienced winemaking partners, began producing its own wines under the Maius label. Their first vintage was released in 2004, and a dedicated winery was built on the estate in 2011.
Vineyards & Terroir:
The vineyards of Maius are nestled in the Barranc de la Bruixa, a strikingly rugged landscape protected by the Montsant mountains. The steep terrain necessitates traditional terraced viticulture, with vines planted on slopes that face the sun. Soil profiles here include a mix of limestone, gravel and the classic Priorat licorella (slate), contributing to textured, mineral-driven wines with concentrated flavors even from low yields.
Philosophy & Practices:
Maius is committed to organic viticulture and sustainable practices, with careful hands-on management of the vineyard and winery processes. Harvesting is done manually to ensure only the best fruit is selected, and the winery blends traditional winemaking with contemporary care to capture the character of each site and variety.
Wines:
The winery produces a range of organic wines that reflect the distinctive Priorat identity. These include:
-
Maius Barranc de la Bruixa: a structured red based on local varieties such as Carignan (also known locally as samsó), Garnacha and Cabernet Sauvignon, often aged in French and American oak.
-
Maius Assemblatge: a more approachable red with shorter oak influence and lively fruit character.
Enotourism:
Visitors can also enjoy wine tastings and guided tours that explore the vineyards, winery facilities, and the stunning Montsant landscape, making Maius a notable stop for those exploring Priorat’s wine culture.
In summary, Maius Viticultors is a small, passionate Priorat winery blending family heritage, careful organic farming and a deep sense of place—producing wines that express the powerful terroir of Catalunya’s rugged Montsant-Priorat region.
