Vall de Baldomar

Vall de Baldomar is a family-run winery in Catalunya, situated in the small village of Baldomar in the Noguera region (province of Lleida). It forms part of the Denominación de Origen Costers del Segre, a less widely known but distinctive Catalan wine region characterised by its varied microclimates and continental influences.

The winery was founded in the 1980s by Hermenegildo Porta Trepat, who began with a passion for winemaking and an experimental vineyard planted in 1981, and later established the winery with the help of oenologist Joan Milà, releasing its first labelled wine in 1989. Today Hermenegildo continues the project with his daughter Marta, blending tradition with thoughtful, quality-driven practices.

Location & Environment:
Vall de Baldomar lies in a small valley framed by the River Segre and the Montsec Mountains, a setting that creates a unique microclimate—with marked temperature swings between day and night, cold winters and warm summers—that gives its vineyards a distinctive character. The limestone and clay soils help retain moisture and support vine health.

Viticulture & Style:
The estate cultivates its vineyards with careful, minimal intervention, emphasising precise viticulture to produce grapes of high quality. Vineyards are scattered across the landscape, each plot contributing its own nuances to the wines.

Wines:
Vall de Baldomar’s wines are grouped into two main families:

  • Baldomà: Wines that express the personality of the local terroir, such as the joyful and fruity Petit Baldomà and the more expressive Baldomà Selecció.

  • Cristiari: A line of special wines that reflect the winery’s commitment to difference and origin, including Cristiari Blanc, Rosat and d’Alòs, These wines aim to convey the unique climatic and geographical signature of Baldomar.

Approach & Philosophy:
From its origins as a personal experiment to a respected boutique producer, Vall de Baldomar is known for wines with personality—rooted in place, shaped by climate, soil and careful vineyard work, and offering both approachable everyday wines and more nuanced, characterful bottles that stand out within the Costers del Segre appellation.

If you’re interested in Catalan wines beyond the well-known regions like Priorat or Penedès, Vall de Baldomar offers a distinctive expression of inland Catalunya terroir.
